Hallo,
here is the homework that you should have completed for the week beginning Monday, November 2:
German 1 AH 22
German 2 AH 34 LB 12
German 3 and 4 LB 15 and 17 (we skipped story 16) and excercise A from the AH

A few news items:
The visiting German students went to the beach on Tuesday. Although it rained, hailed (!) and was very windy, it was a great time. On Thursday, they went to Fort Vancouver and the Japanese Garden in Portland. They learned a little about the fur trade and Japanese influence in Oregon. The mist in the trees added to the garden's picturesque vistas.
Deutsch Trading Cards were released on Wednesday. Herr J still has plenty of packs. So, bring a buck and pick up a pack.
Finally, Friday, Oct. 30 is German Spirit Day. Kids are receiving a treat for wearing their German t-shirts. If you don't have a shirt, you can still get one. They are only $10. Show German spirit and get a shirt.

If you are a senior and have not done so already, please bring me your payment of $25 asap for the German Honor Society--I need to send payment off this week. You get Honor Cords, a tassle, your name indicated in the graduation program, your name listed with the national registry, and something to put on your resume. It is a great way to be recognised at graduation for your 3 or 4 years in German.

Also, we have an upcoming activity. On Thursday, May 7th we have the Foreign Language basketball tournament. It's right after school in the gym. Show up and let's see if we can get the Beorg Cup back.

Lots of news today.
1. Extra Credit--go eat a meal at the Bavarian Haus in Mt. Angel. Tell the waitress you are from Sprague High. Then, write a short paragraph in German stating when and with whom you went and what you ate. You can do this twice for extra credit. Do it by the end of May.

2. Honor Society--senior students in German 3 and 4 can join. Bring me your payment of $25, preferably by the end of next week (April 17th). This will get you a tassle and cord to wear at graduation, a symbol by your name in the graduation program, and something to put on your resume. Congratulations to those of you have have taken 3 or 4 years of German. BTW, names of those who have taken 4 years are going up on the wall now.

3. The copy of the final script will be sent out this weekend. Please look it over carefully and print your sections. There are significant changes from the last version, so you'll need to print anew.

Great news! Deutsch Trading Cards are being released next week! Come to the DTC release party on Wednesday, March 18 right after school in the commons. Cards will be released at 3:03 pm. So, bring a couple bucks and pick up a stack of cards.

If you are interested in the trip to Europe, have your parents come to an information meeting on either Thursday, March 12 or Tuesday, March 17. It's the same meeting, so no need to come to both. Both meetings are at 7 pm in room 113. The trip will be an unforgettable experience.

Hallo Schüler,
Remember, tomorrow is our trip to the Bavarian Haus. Some people have asked me if they can sign up on Thursday. No, the BH needed our numbers a few days ago. Also, all the songs we've been singing in preparation for the trip are on our website. Go to 'songs' > Rheinlander songs. There they are.

We have the Christmas program coming up, too. It's next Wednesday, Dec. 10th. Be there at 7 pm. It's extra credit, but also a lot of fun. Those songs are also on our site, but under Christmas songs. There is one change in the lyrics, though. At one spot in 'O, Tannenbaum,' one or two words are different. There are several versions of this song, just as there are sometimes different versions of songs that we sing. So, don't be surprised.

Some folks have asked me about Deutsch Trading Cards. All I can say right now is that they are in process. I have a good number of them designed. More info will be forthcoming.

Some bad news: we lost the Gold Cup last week. We had a good team, but just couldn't get the ball into the goal. We beat the ASL-ers in the first game 6-3, but lost 3-0 to the Spaniards in the championship game. Wait'll next year!

Hallo Schüler!
There was no new homework over the Thanksgiving break. I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday.

This Thursday, Dec. 4th is our trip to the Bavarian Haus. Please sign up as soon as possible. The number of sign-ups is very low so far. I will probably have to cancel one of the busses that I have ordered. That means that I will have to have a cut-off number that is considerably lower than what we normally have--AND YOU MIGHT NOT GET TO GO! Again, sign up ASAP! I probably will not be able to take any sign-ups on Thursday. The Bavarian Haus needs the number of attendees soon. It will be a lot of fun--good chow and good cheer. They're making fondue for us, so get your money in. Make a check out to "German Club" (although I will accept cash). Only $22.

There is a new "Ask Dr. J" question on our site. It's about 'The hardest language to learn.' Many of you have probably had the question or heard people offer their opinions. Well, check out what Herr J has to say about it.

This year will be fun as well. There are also several trips to Europe coming up. Check this site often for info.

I will post homework on this site every day. So, if you are gone, you can check to see what is due the next period. The homework will be posted on the A-day. Hallo Schüler,
Well, the last poll is done--Star Wars quotes. "Ich liebe dich. Ich weiss" won pretty handily. Keep your eyes on this page for the next poll, which should appear in a few days. It will be worth your time to vote!

The 25 coolest words in German list is now out and on our site. Check that page for the list and some explanations. The top word this year was a chart-topper a few years ago. Sadly, no one was able to guess this year's #1 for a prize. But, here's a chance to win a prize: students who can tell me ALL the words that have been on the chart for all 4 years get a prize. Also, to be more specific, if you can tell me which words have been in the top ten all four years and their placings each year get another prize. This offer will last about a week or two.

Finally, we have a new link under our 'Songs' page--Disney songs. We are putting up lyrics to Disney movie songs. The Little Mermaid has been up for a few days and Tarzan lyrics went up today. Check 'em out.

Hallo Schüler!

It is with the greatest sadness that I must report that we, the Germans, did not bring home the Beorg Cup in last Thursday's Foreign Language Basketball Tournament. :( The Spaniards beat the ASL team in game one and the Germans beat the ASL-ers in game two. For the championship, the Spaniards beat us quite handily. Wait 'til next year!

In two days, on Wednesday, April 23rd there are two, zwei, two, German activities. First, that is German Spirit Day. So, find your "Küss mich, ich spreche Deutsch" T-shirt and wear it to school. You will receive a prize if you do. Second, we're headed off to a new restaurant, the Bavarian Haus. The food there is great and we'll have a great time. There is still space, but not a lot, so sign up ASAP!

There will be a new poll and photos of the FL b-ball tourney up soon, so check out those pages. Also, there will be lyrics to new pop songs soon. And, a new link will appear on the songs page soon--Disney songs! Stay tuned for that. Lots of cool stuff going on in the German program.

Finally, keep the evening of the last day of school open. That's when the third and fourth year students are performing "Arielle, die kleine Meerjungfrau." You'll definitely want to be there.

Hallo Schüler!

The names of the folks who played on our championship soccer team (the Gold Cup winners) are now on the--next to the Beorg Cup winners. Also, Herr J has started writing the names of the new "Wall of Famers" on the wall (The Wall of Fame lists the the kids who have taken all four years of German). It's a long list this year and will take a while to finish. When you come to class, have a look at the names. Those students have a lot to be proud of. Someday your name could be up there--make a goal now to take all four years!

Hallo Schüler,
check out the new photos of the Foreign language soccer tournament and DTC set 2 release party. Also, there are lyrics to new songs on the 'pop' section of the Deutsche Songs link. Many new songs will appear in the next few weeks. After we're done with the pop songs, we'll start working on getting lyrics for some Disney songs. That's a way off, though.

Also, we're getting down to the last of the DTC. You might want to pick up a couple packs in the next few days before they're all gone. It's unlikely that Herr J will print any more.

Hallo Schüler!
The second set of Deutsch Trading Cards has been released and they seem to be a big hit. Here is some info on the cards:
Rare cards and # now available:
Frau Burleson 9
Herr Curry 7
Herr J im Kindergarten 5
Frau McElliott 6 (3 were already in the last set)

It seems that only a few Godzilla and Jacob Grimm (card #135) have been found.

Here's an interesting exercise that can earn you a prize. Sometimes, for various reasons, mistakes slip into the final product. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with SOME of these cards? I write SOME because I usually find the mistake and correct it, but only after some cards have been printed and released. If you find the mistake, bring the card to me and you'll get a prize! (To find the mistakes does NOT require a knowledge of German!)
From the old set: Karten 17, 18, 19, 23, there is also a problem with some cards in the range of numbers 33-48, but I am not exactly sure which ones. YOU find them!
From the new set: 156, 176, 209

Cards 153-164 are a set-you need all twelve of them. Although they look very similar, they're not the same! Get all twelve, put them in order, and flip them very quickly. They make a small motion picture (this is the way movies work!). You'll also be able to read the message!

WE WERE VICTORIOUS IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE SOCCER TOURNAMENT!!!!

Andrew Basille scored a goal in regulation, but the Spaniards countered, which sent the game into penalty kick-off. Cameron Norris kicked the winning goal for us! Thanks, Cameron!
We are now the proud owners of the "Gold Cup."

Soccer Tourmament!!

Thursday, January 17th 3 p.m. in the stadium. Dig out the soccer cleates and help win the Gold Cup. It would look really nice on the shelf next to the Beorg Cup.

Hallo Schüler!
A milestone has now been reached--Frau McLean has put together the first complete set of Deutsch Trading Cards!!! She showed me her set and has claimed her prize. Congrats to Frau McLean.

We were in the Statesman Journal on Wed. Jan. 9 (Mittwoch dem 9. Jan.) for the Foreign Language Department "Christmas Around the World" presentation. Karen Kleinman did a fine job writing up the event. Check out the article in Herr J's room if you can't get a hold of a paper.
This is the second time in a month that we have appeared in the Statesman. Deutsch Trading Cards were written up on December 19th.

Last night was our "Christmas around the World" program. It was absolutely great! All language groups put on a fine show. There was quite a variety in the program; we had different types of songs, readings, music, and a bit of comedy. Thanks to all of you who came. Remember that our "Christmas around the World" cultural evening is tomorrow, Tuesday. Please dress nicely and be at the Pantheon around 6:15. There will be extra credit for those who participate. It will be a lot of fun. Bring your folks and show them what you have learned in German.

I have put together more packs of German Trading Cards. (Yes, we sold out again Monday morning, but I've put together more packs for Tuesday). So, stop by and pick up a couple packs. 50 cents each.

Also, in our room there is a notice board with slips of paper on which you can write which cards you need and have to trade. come in, fill out a slip, tack it on the board and trade with people who are not in your class.

Not many people are taking advantage of the 'card of the day (Karte des Tages).' Remember, the first person who emails me the NAME of the card gets a prize, and each person who shows me the card on the specified day gets a prize. I'll announce this only on the website.

Hallo Schüler!
The release of Deutsch Trading Cards (DTC) was a huge success! About 50 attended the party. We had cake and plenty of noise-makers. Of course, we had a countdown and threw confetti at 2:50 pm. Folks lined up, bought, and started trading their cards. The last people left about 5 pm!!!! The rarest card--Frau McElliott--was found by three people, including Ms. McLean. Will she want to part with it? What's it gonna take?

We sold over 300 packs and they are sold out at present. A few more packs will be put together in the next few days. In a week or two, another set of completely new cards will be released. The entire set will have about 150 cards. About 100 are out now. So, keep checking this page for the release date of the new cards. There will be some very cool and special things.

Finally, there is a chance for you to receive prizes with your cards. Every so often, I will post a 'card of the day.' Bring me that card on the specified date and you'll get a prize. I will not announce this in class. The 'card of the day' will be announced ONLY on this site. One more opportunity for another prize: the FIRST person to email me the NAME of the card will receive an extra prize!

Last night was the Rheinlander trip. We had the second largest group we've ever taken--112 people. Lots of parents, teachers, and office staff went along. We celbrated Mrs. Allen's and Mrs. Chaney's birthdays. A good time was had by one and all. Good chow, good cheer! Photos will be showing up on the 'Events' page soon. Rumour has it that there might even be a video clip! What will it be of?

Keep watching this page. Pretty soon, a new feature will appear: Latest Poll. The first poll has appeared. Have a look off to the left. Every week there will be a new poll. Vote on all kinds of cool deutsch-related topics.

Hi Folks! Remember that when you go on vacation or take some other little trip you should take your Deutschbuch with you and have your picture taken. You've seen the photo of Miriam and Weird Al. Miriam remembered her book and had that cool photo taken. Just think how dull it would have been had she not had her Deutschbuch with her! We'll put your photo on the wall in our room. Kids have had photos of them and their books taken at the beach, on an Alaskan cruise, on Mayan ruins, in Japan under a blossoming cherry tree, at Disney World, the US Naval Academy, West Point, the Iwo Jima memorial, and lots of other places. However, your photo doesn't need to be at some exotic place--any cool place will do.

--Mark Tuesday, December 11th on your calendars. That’s the night of the “Christmas around the World” cultural night. The Foreign Language Department is putting on a program for your folks, friends, and the community. We’ll talk about some traditions that Germans observe and sing the songs that we’ve been practicing. Extra credit for those who attend and sing loud! It’ll be fun. Hope to see you there.
